Biography

Benedikt Blech is a lighting designer, lighting operator, and gaffer specializing in musicals, theater, television, and live productions. For him, light is far more than mere illumination: It creates atmosphere, directs attention, and enhances the emotional impact of a production. Or, as he puts it himself:

Light doesn’t decorate theatre. It defines it.

The foundation of his artistic approach was established early on: his thirteen-and-a-half years with the Limburger Domsingknaben (Limburg Cathedral Boys' Choir) fostered a deep understanding of the interplay between music, timing, and emotional impact. This musical background continues to influence his work today, forming the basis of a creative approach in which lighting is conceived musically and employed dramaturgically. When approaching new musical theater productions, he often begins by studying piano reductions and scores to gain an early understanding of musical structures, dynamics, and emotional arcs.

After completing his training as an event technology specialist, Benedikt Blech specialized early on in lighting design and complex live productions. He gained significant artistic inspiration through further training at the renowned Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London—one of the world’s leading performing arts institutions—where he focused on video projection mapping.

His career has spanned national and international television, film, event, and stage productions. Working in various roles—including lighting designer, lighting operator, gaffer, and member of creative lighting teams—Benedikt Blech has contributed to productions such as Sportschau, Wer wird Millionär? (Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?), Let’s Dance, Deutschland sucht den Superstar (German Idol), and the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, as well as scripted productions like How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast), Club der roten Bänder, and Alarm für Cobra 11.

Furthermore, he has worked on productions and projects for clients such as ZDF, WDR, RTL, SAT.1, EndemolShine Germany, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Beethovenhalle Bonn, and the Ruhrtriennale, alongside musical, concert, and live productions across the German-speaking region. His experience also extends to corporate events—such as the Telekom Top Management Meeting and annual general meetings for major listed companies—as well as international projects associated with the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in Los Angeles.

Alongside television productions, his focus is increasingly on lighting design for musicals and theater. Productions such as 9 to 5 and Dear Evan Hansen, as well as other work in musical theater, underscore his commitment to treating lighting as an integral part of a production—musically conceived, dramaturgically driven, and emotionally impactful.

As a member of the German Musical Academy, Benedikt Blech combines technical precision with a clear artistic vision. His work centers on the interplay between musical precision and emotional impact—encapsulated in his guiding principle:

Musical precision. Theatrical emotion.

Benedikt Blech is currently completing his certification as a Bachelor Professional in Event Technology (IHK) and is continuously developing his creative and technical skills—with a clear focus on sophisticated musical, theater, and live productions.
